Esporão keeps talha wines alive, with its Moreto and Roupeiro wines 09/02/2023
Preserving ancient traditions without losing a vision of the future is part of Esporão's goals, materialized through DOC talha wines.
The long tradition of talha wine began in the Alentejo over 2000 years ago. Esporão embraced this ancient technique in 2014, digging into it to understand how to keep it alive. The company started from the bottom, learning from those who knew the traditions of old times, listening to recommendations from friends and partners experienced in this technique. Esporão used a local producer’s pez recipe to coat the interiors with pine tree resin, learnt techniques and bought its first amphorae. Soon, the first Esporão talha red wine was produced. This was followed by a talha white wine, always in small quantities - between 600 and 1500 liters. It continued to learn from its own experiences, sharing experiences with those who master the skill, identifying new grape varieties, recovering old amphorae - some dating back to 1655, others from the 19th century - and improving the process.
The restlessness to search for more knowledge and other insights, always with care and respect for tradition, led to Talha Roupeiro 2019 (1400 bottles) and Talha Moreto 2020 (624 bottles). Very small production volumes, just like in jewelry, using the grape varieties from century-old ungrafted vines that give the wines their names and are planted in sandy soils, in the Granja-Amareleja region.
