Esporão awarded the Robert Parker Green Emblem 28/11/2022
Esporão has been awarded the Robert Parker Green Emblem by Robert Parker Wine Advocate, one of the world’s most influential and renowned publications, joining an exclusive group of worldwide producers, pioneers and leaders in sustainability.
According to the publication itself, the Robert Parker Green Emblem recognises wine producers who are advocates of sustainability in every sense of the word, producers who extend their efforts far beyond the requirements for organic and biodynamic certification. They are sustainability ambassadors and pioneers, leading the charge to make the wine industry and the planet better places for current and future generations alike. This means Esporão joins an exclusive group of global wine producers, representing Portugal alongside Julia Kemper.
More than just being part of our DNA, sustainability is the fruit of Esporão’s culture of responsibility, innovation and quality. It is part of a daily and rewarding journey at Herdade do Esporão, Alentejo, Quinta dos Murças, Douro, and Quinta do Ameal, Vinho Verde. It is sustainability based on the belief that the best for Esporão, and the best for all its employees, is the best for the future of the planet and for people’s lives.
Esporão owns and manages 637 hectares (1574 acres) of vineyards, of which 623 hectares (1539 acres) are certified organic, the remaining 14 hectares (34 acres), located at Quinta do Ameal, are under integrated production. Esporão is one of the world’s largest producers of certified organic wines.
It is run by João Roquette of the family that owns it. Their other properties, such as Quinta dos Murças in Douro, are also 100% certified organic. There are initiatives on water use, energy use, packaging, local labour and more.”
In the words of João Roquette, Chairman of the Board at Esporão, “this recognition is the result of sincere, determined and innovative teamwork that has marked our identity, culture and positioning. When we began this journey, we did so with the conviction and ambition that it would be the best for Esporão, for the quality of our products, for the future of the planet and for people’s lives”.
